The Follow-Up Interview That Wasn’t

April 30, 2009 James Leave a comment

I arrived at Lowes this morning the same as yesterday: 15  minutes early.  There were two ladies joining me, also there for what they assumed were interviews.  As it turned out, they simply drug tested all three of us using those little toothbrush looking sticks that you ahve to hold between your cheek and gum for like three minutes.

After that, we sealed our evelopes and the lady told us she’d call us with the results in 2 to 3 days.  Simple enough, I suppose.

Still unclear on if this means we’re good to go or what.  I’m waiting …

I Am Noble

April 30, 2009 James Leave a comment

After about 4 days of hunting for eggs, eating chocolate, planting flowers and putting bunny ears on various races, Shavelle, my hunter main, has completed Noblegarden.  Shavelle the Noble is ready for action.

Now, perhaps I can turn back to my poor warlock and continue leveling him.

Oh wait …  Children’s Week starts in 2 more days!  Argh!  Darn you Blizzard!!

Weary & Worn?

April 30, 2009 James 1 comment

It seems I may soon have a part time job to go along with my full time employment.  About a month or so ago, I filled out an online application for Lowes, a home improvement store.  Yesterday, I received a phone call wanting to set up an interview.

At 1:00PM today, I had my interview.  Normally I can tell when something goes well, and if I were to judge solely on the interviewers face, I would say I failed.  However, her words were another story.  She wanted to schedule a second interview with another gentleman for 8:00AM Thursday morning.  After I came home, she called again and wanted to know if I could do a drug test tomorrow, as well.

I’m not getting too excited, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.  We aren’t hurting for money, but it would be very nice to have an extra income to put back should things go south in this wonky economy.  So, cross your fingers and send your prayers, I’ll be rising early tomorrow and heading out to find out what’s going on.

A Pause In Leveling

April 29, 2009 James Leave a comment

It seems that Blizzard saw what a roll I was on in leveling my warlock.  So they threw a wrench into the works.  That’s right, Blizzard sabatauged my work by releasing … Nobelgarden and Children’s Week.

So, until I wring out a few achievements on both of these “holiday” events, I’m afraid Hadox will be taking a back seat.  This is sudden news because, as I glanced through the achievements the other night, I decided to skip them all together.  But then one of my buddies helped me get the first achievement, and it was on like Donkey Kong.

Luckily, I’m not one of those people that try to get achievements on all of their toons.  I use my hunter (main) and that’s it.  It saves so much time and hassel that way.  And helps maintain some sanity.

“Empress” by Karen Miller

April 26, 2009 James Leave a comment

** Potential Spoilers Follow Below **

“Empress” by Karen Miller is the first book in the Godspeaker Trilogy.  It is followed by “The Riven Kingdom” and “The Hammer of God.”

Synopsis: In a family torn apart by poverty and violence, Hekat is no more than an unwanted mouth to feed, worth only a few coins from a passing slave trader.

But Hekat was not born to be a slave.  For her, a different path has been chosen.  It is a path that will take her from stinking back alleys to the house of her god, from blood-drenched battlefields to the glittering palaces of Mijak.

This is the story of Hekat, slave to no man."

Miller has not only created a fantasy world, she has created an entire religion for her people to worship.  The only issue I take with it, at least as far as the first book goes, is that the origins of the God is not really covered or dealt with.  We simply know it is there, and is virtually a center character in and of itself.  Without the God the characters worship, there is no story to tell.

Starting at the general age of 12, we are taken into Hekat’s world to watch her grow and what guides her in the decisions she makes.  And, let me tell you, the decisions she makes, although they may be for her God’s glory, are down right insane.  If, by the end of the first book, you do not completely despise Hekat, then you are a better person than me!

I do not mean that in a bad way, either.  Miller is so devout in seeing Hekat follow through with her self-centered and stubborn ways that she succeeds in creating a completely unlikable main character.  In one sentence I will feel sorrow for Hekat and her ways, then in the next 100 pages, I’ll hate her completely, only to have another sentence pop up that shows her human side once again.

Never … I repeat, never have I been so torn between a fictional character such as this woman who rests in the God’s smiting eye.

As for the story itself, that is an epic all of its own.

Similar to Miller’s other series of novels, the “Kingmaker, Kingbreaker” storyline, “Empress” follows a lower-class individual as they rise through the ranks of society.  The particular society of “Empress” sees our main protagonist start out as a poor, abused child.  She is bought by slave traders and treated “special,” sparking the attitude that will serve her later, throughout the rest of the novel.

Hekat frees herself, works her way into the the cities military unit (called a warhost, here) as a “chicken killer,” and eventually becomes a soldier.  From there she only moves up, never looking back, sacrificing whatever she feels the God wishes her to.  Even if it means slaughtering hundreds, she feels the need to please the God and sees herself as a tool it uses to purge the land and teach the world of It’s power.

Eventually, Hekat does meet those who would clash with her dash to power.  In those people, she seethes her hatred, defying them at every turn and creating power struggles against the warlord from his once closest advisors.

The characters are each fairly simple and one-minded.  You won’t find too many instances where one particular figure really jumps out at you as being wildly different.  All of the players here are cardboard, rarely straying from their cut pattern.  But I just can’t express how much the story hooked me in despite that.  I do not know what Ms. Millers secret is, but I hope she continues the magic in the next two novels of the trilogy.

But, of course, don’t take just my word for it.  I went out on a limb and bough the first novel anyways, after reading several negative reviews of the work.  Luckily, you really can’t judge a book by its cover (or its reviews.)  Each person is different and has their own tastes and opinions on what good fantasy is.  Personally, I think Miller has hit a home run, once again, by creating this magical land, its all seeing God and the numerous lead figures within it.

Highly recommended from my bookshelf, “Empress” is a novel you should at least pick up at your local library, if they have it.  Give it a try, if the fantasy genre is your flavor.  You might be disappointed, you might not – but you’ll never know until you try.

Hadox – Level 28

April 26, 2009 James Leave a comment

The original title for this post was “Hadox – Level 26,” but it seems I’ve caught a breeze and sailed out a few more levels!

I’m also continuing to use “James’s Leveling Guide Add-On.”  One good thing about the guide is that you don’t get burnt out in one particular zone.  The writers have done a decent job in dividing up your questing routine so that you aren’t dedicated completely to one zone until it is completely done and time to move on.  For example, you may do 5 to 6 questlines in Westfall, then be sent to Dun Morogh for a brief period.  My little explainations do not do it justice, honestly.  It’s something everyone must try for themselves, if that is the kind of thing you like.

Right now, I’m starting the “Legend of Stalvan” questline, doing some odd and end bits in Darkshire and coasting my way to level 29.  I am actually about a level ahead of the guide, somehow.

At level 26 I visited the AH in Stormwind and upgraded all of my gear.  I’m down to 9 gold.  Level 30 is coming up fast and it’s almost mount time.  Yay!  I also have the quest several levels back to go get my succubus, but right now I’m making do with my wonderful voidwalker.  I like those blue guys.  They are so macho, eh?

Anyways, when I reach level 30 I’ll update again.

Cooking Up Some Reviews

April 23, 2009 James Leave a comment

I know there are no journalistic gems here, but I am working on a couple of reviews concerning two books I’ve read (am reading) and a video game.  Nothing new and groundbreaking, but I’m gonna put them out there for anyone that might wonder … :)

That’s coming up this weekend.  Just so you know I’m not just resting on my laurels … whatever those are …

Miss USA Controversy

April 21, 2009 James Leave a comment

There’s no link to the numerous news stories covering this topic.  It’s easy enough to find, if you haven’t heard about it yet.  My personal feeling is that the young woman deserves applause for speaking her mind and standing up for her personal beliefs.  It’s already bad enough in this world where people disguard their morales just to go along with the “norm” or be politically correct.  But here this woman was, participating for Miss USA of all things, and she dared to speak her mind and risk losing the contest, which she did.

Again, whether you agree with her or not, I cheer her for standing up and not following the rest of the sheep just to please others and be politically correct.

Hadox — Talent Spec

April 21, 2009 James Leave a comment

Warlock (19/52/0) – Talent Calculator – WoW Head

This is a link to the build I’m currently working toward for Hadox.  Of course, I’m a bit aways on this, but it’s my general plan.  As with my hunter, where I took care of my pet and went Beat Mastery, I intend to take care of my demons by spec’ing Demonology.   Also, to buff up my curses, a few points will go into Affliction for good measure.

I realize, alot of people plan their specs around a specific play style.  “Oh, this build is perfect for PVP and I’ll kick butt in arenas!”  or “Oh, yes, PVE all the way, this is how everyone should play.”

Myself, I spec how I want to spec based on what I see and like.  It may not be the most popular or allow me to level at the speed of light, but I don’t want to create a character and be max level in a days time.  My particular play style involves taking my time and enjoying the experience.  As I’m always telling people who want to know how they should spec or what gear they should get, “Play how you want to play.  It’s your $15.”

Hadox, Human Male Warlock

April 20, 2009 James Leave a comment

April 16th, 2009, I started another alt.  A Human warlock, it’s the third or fourth time I’ve actually started a race of this particular class.  My goal, this time, was slightly different.

You see, I have a problem leveling without guidance.  It isn’t that I don’t or can’t read the quest text.  No, that isn’t the problem.  The way my mind and interest works is that I have to have a specific step-by-step plan.  So, rolling up this alt, I also downloaded a fairly new mod to test out.

Thanks to the creator of James’ Leveling Guides, some of the most popular detailed leveling guides for World of Warcraft, we now have an in-game add on version.  Available at World of Warcraft Pro, James’ Leveling Guide: Addon Version, uses two popular Warcraft addons along with their own.  As of patch 3.1, Tomtom and Tourguide have both been updated for the patch, though to use the leveling guide, you’ll have to select to load out of date addons.  It will still work fine, mind you, since it is mainly a text-based addon.

So that, in a nutshell, is my plan.  Having only one level 80 character, a female Draenei hunter, this warlock will be my second.  Using James’ Leveling Guide and my few hours of gameplay each day, Hadox will slowly (or quickly) grind his way to the coveted level 80 spot.  My second character to achieve such an honor.

I’ll document the journey here, time allowed, and share my experiences with this new addon and how it seems to work for me.  Since creating Hadox this past Thursday, I am, as of 12:48AM this Monday morning, at level 21 and about to tick over to 22.  With only two hours of average gameplay a day, if that, I’ve leveled nearly 22 levels in 4 days.  That isn’t bad in my little world, folks.  Just have to maintain focus, my one weakness.

So stay tuned, we’ll be figuring out some gear in the next post or two as I draw closer to 25 or 30.
