LotR Extended Editions (BluRay)

Amazon.com: Lord of the Rings Extended Edition BluRay

I did not know this had already been released. When the original theatrical versions were released, I refused to buy the film series on BluRay. You see, years and years of being burned like that has taught me that some things you need to wait on. Sure enough, without me even hearing about it, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy has been released on BluRay with the extended versions! I own the dvd versions, but I have to say, when viewing them on my BluRay player and seeing them upconverted, they look like utter crap. So, now that the hi-def, super long film about walking is out, I must begin scrounging my pennies up to purchase this … my … precious

A Weekend Full of Movies

February 27, 2012 Leave a comment

This weekend I’ve had the great pleasure of watching:

Secretariat – Disney’s fluff film of the true story of Secretariat and his owner, Penny Tweedy. Good family movie about a woman stepping outside of her “house wife” status and into something much bigger. Nice little feel-good movie, maybe a little more fluffy than the real life story, but it makes you feel good and has much more humor than I expected.

Let Me In – Chloe Grace Moretz broke out in Kick Ass, and Let Me In continues to show her acting chops. A remake of the Swedish film (based on the novel of the same name) Let the Right One In, Let Me In is the tale of a shy, bullied boy who befriends the new girl next door … who happens to be a vampire. I haven’t seen the original yet, but this version was a great film. Some may feel sorry for Abby, others will see a deeper evil in her. I look at it as she is just as much a victim as Owen, they just have very different lifestyles.

McLintock! – The first John Wayne movie I’ve seen all the way through. Recommended by a co-worker, this film is hilarious! A great comedy western with the Duke of westerns himself. I can’t say much for Wayne’s acting in the film and the delivery of his lines, but as a comedy, the entire cast delivers.

Autumn – Do you know what I like in Zombie movies? Zombies. A hour in, there have been exactly one close call involving the walking dead. The acting is pretty bad, the story is pretty bad, the audio is horrible. I can normally find the bright side in any movie I watch, but there is nothing really redeeming in this movie. If I had to say something positive about the film, I suppose it would be that it could potentially be a good starting point for a series. The evolution and adjustment of the recently deceased from reawakening to the blood thirsty death bringers that they should be could be skewed into something that hasn’t really been presented before, I suppose. Although, there again, I guess the last George Romero movie in the Dead series, Land of the Dead, could be presented as an example of this – the zombies, by films end, were starting to show intelligence in picking up weapons, banding together in groups and storming the city. But I’ve already gone off on a tangent. My advice is to avoid Autumn at all costs unless you just want to experience it for yourself. But I can’t honestly recommend it.

The Chaperone – Starring a wrestler known as Triple H (real name Paul Levesque), I wasn’t expecting much from this film, billed as a teen comedy. It instead turned out to be a pretty good flick. It’s about a man who comes out of prison after 7 years and tries to make amends with a daughter he barely knows. When that fails, he almost turns back to his old ways of robbing banks, but at the last minute has a change of heart. He instead accompanies his daughters class on a field trip. Little does he know that his bank robbing buddies have hidden their loot aboard the bus, and he is involved anyways. A fun little film that hit me unexpectedly by how good it was. Not very funny, not overly dramatic, but a nice little blend of both.

True Grit (1969) – The John Wayne version! I have the remake with Jeff Bridges in my Netflix queue, but figure I might as well check out the original first since I’ve already watched one John Wayne movie this weekend. Well made film with Wayne toward the end of his career. Also had younger versions of  Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper.

Sex-Changing Treatment for Kids

February 20, 2012 Leave a comment

From Yahoo! News: Sex-Changing Treatment for Kids: It’s on the Rise

I originally posted the following comment on my Facebook wall for my friends to read, along with a link to the article. You know how the whole process goes, I’m sure. Anyways, considering my friendships on Facebook, I figure there was bound to be a few people that would either take it the wrong way and get mad, or take it the way I intended it and still get mad. So, I will post it here instead. I normally try to stray away from issues such as this because of the tone they set – same goes for politics and religion. But I’m in a mood tonight and thought I’d share. So, without further ado, the following is my original, unedited post from Facebook after seeing the article linked above.

The kid in the article was 18 months old when she told her parents she was a boy. They went with it and raised her as a boy. The girls classmates all think she’s a boy. The parents are even watching for the first signs of puberty so they can begin the sex change process. I’d recommend shooting the mom and dad in the head, throwing the kid in therapy and taking away the license of all the doctors involved in this case. 18 months old? Really? She could barely walk and couldn’t even form a complete sentence but knew right away that she was born the wrong sex. I’m ashamed to admit I live on the same planet as the people in this article. Even the reporter refers to her as a him throughout the entire piece. If a grown legal aged teen/adult wants to have this procedure, by all means go ahead. But when you start taking the word of a 1 1/2 year old as definitive on the subject and proceed to raise them as the opposite sex, that’s messed up.
Maybe not newspaper-print quality, but what do you expect for a post to a social networking site? Either way, I vented, now I’m off to bed. Have a good day, sir-and-or-madam.

Misfits (Hulu)

There’s another British science-fiction series out there I’d like to promote. I suppose the most popular one folks over here know is Doctor Who, but that’s a fun jaunt through time and space and occasionally a dimension or two with an alien thrown in to the mix at some point. What I want to discuss is a much, much more adult series. No, not Torchwood, either. I’m talking about one that’s even more adult than anything Captain Jack has thrown at us! Please allow me to introduce you to Misfits.

Misfits is a series about a group of 20-somethings that are doing community service in a fictional town. They are caught, along with their parole officer, in a freak storm one afternoon and struck by lightening (yes, all of them). They soon discover that the lightening has given them super powers, each one having a power that – to us the viewer – fit their personalities. But wait, this isn’t a British version of Heros. No, this series is actually good! I know, that’s not fair because, seriously, Heros had its moments, it just didn’t know how to carry through with the whole super powers business. A majority of the time, the characters in Heros walked through entire seasons moping around about their powers and what a curse they were and how they wanted to be rid of them. In Misfits, there is no moping (well, there is a little by one of the gang who isn’t quit sure what his power is yet, but there are hints as the first season progresses). There is also no real super heroics – at least not yet.

What Misfits brings to the table, in my opinion, is an example of how well a show about super powers can be done. The writing is excellent, plot points are seeded and weaved through the entire season’s story arc. Each character has their stereotypical foibles, but they are relatable as young adults trying to come into their own. Misfits is also funny, dramatic, suspenseful and very adult. If this were filmed in America, it would be broadcast on one of the cable movie channels. The series contains strong language, occasional nudity, sexual situations and every now and then other adult content. But if you can stomach those things, you should at least give the series a shot. And I don’t mean the first episode, although that is a great place to start ;)  The show really struck me at episode 4, which I just finished watching. Many plot points came together here, and that’s a good thing considering there is only 6 episodes per season.

That is another thing you should know going in, I suppose. There are currently 3 complete seasons available for free on Hulu. It has also been announced that a fourth season will be filmed this year (2012), and I can’t wait for it as long as the stories stay strong. Go check out Hulu, this particular content is free, but also only available from a computer or laptop. You will also have to create an account if you don’t have one already, but no Plus membership is required.

TV Guru – Tomato Interactive LLC

February 18, 2012 Leave a comment

If you love television like I do – well, like I use to, when good programming was readily available, then you know what it is like to not want to miss a single episode of a show you love. Sometimes, though, I’ll stumble across an episode of a show I have never seen, or there have even been times when I’ll sit down to watch a show and not remember if I’ve even seen that particular episode. Well, if you take your television viewing seriously, there’s an app for that.

Tomato Interactive LLC (consisting of John Jacobson of Video Game Outsiders Podcast and Matt McCartny from The Kill Screens, also with Jacobson) has developed TV Guru. This is a basic, no frills app that allows you to create various folders for your viewing habits and within each one type in and find television series that you enjoy. The sky seems to be the limit, as every show I have typed in so far comes right up.

Once your series is selected, it will provide information such as the total number of seasons, the shows current status (cancelled, ended, returning) and list each episode and it’s title as well as a brief synopsis of that particular episode. The idea is that you can check off all those fantastic episodes you have already watched with a simple tap of the screen and narrow down the ones you are still missing out on. It’s a simple record keeper, basically, and it does its job wonderfully.

The app is available to iOS users at .99-cents for a version that works on both iPhone and iPad from the Apple App Store.

Kevin Smith’s Comic Book Men (AMC)

February 16, 2012 Leave a comment

Finally, I was able to watch an episode of AMC’s new series, Kevin Smith’s Comic Book Men. The show follows the antics of the staff in Smith’s comic shop, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. Billed as a limited 6-part series, the show is a mixture of reality television and video podcast. The episode I watched consisted to the cast, Walt, Ming, Mike, Bryan (who doesn’t actually work there) and podcast host Kevin Smith, as they sat around recording the radio show discussing what had happened that day/week in the shop. The dialogue was peppered with clips from what they were actually discussing, showing folks coming in to try and sell merchandise, casual talk between the guys and even a bet between them to see who could sell the most merchandise at a flea market.

At first I wasn’t aware that this was limited to only 6 episodes. Not knowing that, my first impression was that, while I enjoyed the episode, it wasn’t a show that was going to have a very long life. AMC would have cancelled this or refused to renew it after its first season. I base this on the fact that the content – comics and pop culture – has such a limited fan base that the ratings would have fell dramatically, or not even be there at all. It’s target audience is such that it excludes a much larger viewing audience, and I don’t see the regular viewing audience getting hyped about a discussion involving a particular issue of Batman or an artists signature on a particular book.

With that thought out there, like I said, I did enjoy it and will watch all 6 episodes. But, as Bryan said at the end of the episode, “Does anyone actually come in here to buy anything?” At no point in this episode was anyone shown buying anything. In fact, there were no other customers in view. The only content shown was people trying to come in and get excessive amounts of money for items that were valuable to them, only to be disappointed when they were offered much less and then usually refusing and leaving with their property.

If you like Kevin Smith, he only seems to be showcased in the podcast recording – which I believe is available on iTunes. If you enjoy geekdom and the comic and pop culture market, you may also enjoy this show. While not nail-biting reality television, it is decent entertainment.

I had no idea this was a self-help book for nerds. I assumed it was a humorous look on the life of a nerd in todays culture. Still, it’s a good read, so far.

Back to the Future, Episode 1 on iPad is Free!

February 14, 2012 Leave a comment

I had almost forgot about this one! TellTale games is offering Back to the Future The Game, Episode One for free on the iPad for a limited time. To match that, they’re also lowering the price of episodes 2 through 5 to $2.99 in the App Store, also for a limited time. So, if you are the owner of an Apple iPad, and a fan of the Back to the Future franchise, why not pick up the game!?

I downloaded the game Saturday and played for a bit. The graphics are pretty but the gameplay was a bit boring and repetitive. Beautiful game, though and the voices of the characters add to the charm. The story is interesting, though it seems to be straight out of the old cartoon series that came on for a short while. But hey, you can’t beat free!
